The Fortress Theatre Festival - Smederevo, Serbia
The Fortress Theatre is a new festival on the cultural skies of Serbia. It’s a unique cultural production which didn’t exist in our country before. Smederevo with its unique fortress is a great challenge to start such a summer cultural offer and production. A step towards accomplishing this idea was recognising the potentials of the Smederevo fortress, especially the Small Town, a stage that seems to be waiting for its actors, audience, applause. And it is not only the fascinating Small Town that is attractive for performing and producing theatre events; the entire interior of the fortress is a space suitable for many artistic actions.
And so, with a vision of a distinctive festival, started the initiative of valuating those spaces and reviving them through the spirit of art and theatre. Enthusiasm and support of the town of Smederevo gives us strength to fight for this festival, in the year which is inauspicious for culture and art in general.
The Festival has got all preconditions to grow every year, to rise step by step to heights that it will doubtlessly reach in the time to come. When – already next year – the Festival will start its own production, when performances will be made for that very stage and the specific perspectives which are plentiful in the Smederevo fortress, the Fortress Theatre will prove that it was this very festival that lacked in the cultural offer of Serbia.
