New Year Celebration: The Wishing Spheres on the Singapore River
The tradition of the wishing spheres has for many years brought together the inhabitants of Singapore and recently it has also become an international event. People travel from all over the world to write their New Year wishes on huge white spheres and throw them on the Singapore River at Marina Bay.
This year, the Wishing Sphere Project is a significant component of The Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2013, taking place at the symbolic centre of Singapore. This event is more than a celebration; it is an annual tradition for all Singaporeans.
As in previous years, members of the community are all invited to join in the project by writing their wishes for the New Year on a wishing sphere. The organisers will mark those wish by floating the wishing spheres onto the waters of Marina Bay, “the bay of hope and light” as the Singaporeans describe it.
This year's theme is towards 'Gratitude'. Several booths have been set up across the island where people can express their gratefulness and appreciation! However, they do not just write on any ordinary sphere - their hand-written wishes will be part of the visual installation on the 31st December 2012.
So come on down to Marina bay to be a part of the Countdown and be amazed by the spectacular sight of the event. If you can’t make it – you can always write your wish on a virtual sphere here.
