| River//Cities conference in March 2010 in Gdańsk, Poland |
The River//Cities Platform, in collaboration with the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre (BSCC) and LAZNIA Centre for Contemporary Art, would like to invite you to “River Banks as a Space for Citizens Integration”, a two-day conference in Gdansk, Poland, 22-23 March 2010.
Public space is a common good, an essential component in the integration and regeneration of society. Waterfront areas and rivers are especially important as they are at the core of our cities, connecting many important fields, such as the environment, transportation links, architecture, arts and culture. It is essential that our rivers and riverbanks are regenerated in a way that takes civic needs into consideration, while also respecting environmental demands.
The River//Cities Platform is a partnership between cultural, environmental and political initiatives working towards developing their waterfront areas and riverbanks as cultural spaces. The Platform works for the exchange of knowledge, competencies and expertise. Creating favourable conditions for artistic co-productions while commissioning, researcing and writing policy papers in the name of River//Cities are primary goals, as well as advocay and lobbying authorities on all governance levels.
The conference gathers experts and representatives of river initiatives from around Europe, many of them already partners in River//Cities. Organisations and initiatives from Lisbon, Vienna, London, Warsaw, Berlin, Venice and Stockholm, to name a few, will all be present at the conference, to share their experiences and expertise, with a special focus on Gdansk and the Pomorskie region as it tackles its regeneration challenge.
The conference aims to transfer knowledge and competence to local/ regional authorities and research organisations tasked with revitalising riverbanks in urban areas and are in the process of developing projects and initiatives. The programme is open to those interested in the subject: authorities, ngos, artists, culture organisations, environmental groups and others.
The River//Cities Platform is looking to connect with a number of new partner cities around Europe. The Annual General Assembly of the platform will take place in Gdansk on 21 March in the afternoon. A detailed agenda and other information are in the "Download" section of the website.
Practical arrangements will be made by Magda Zakrzewska-Duda, magdalena.zakrzewska@nck.org.pl.
